The Interviews - Somaria Lungaard
6/11/09
I first remember Somaria at RUF. She's right - Nicholas brought her. I had somehow missed the memo, and thought she was Nicholas' previous girlfriend, whom his friends had been very concerned about. They had broken up, but now were they back together? Oh no. It took me awhile to figure out this was someone new, and boy howdy am I glad. Because Nicholas had made a fantastic choice this time. Somaria was so happy to be in a real, gospel community. She embraced the church. She coordinated the making and bringing of cookies to RUF. She was honest with her life. She initiated reaching out to her friends and family back in her home country of Trinidad. We miss her.
Now they have a beautiful son, Henrick, and live in Houston.

1. How did you first get involved with RUF?

A friend brought me (Nicholas)

2. What was/is your favorite part about RUF?

I really like the singing. The music is rich (when I was at RUF, it seemed like a lot of work went into making sure that those who played instruments and led the singing were up to a high standard and nothing was done half-heartedly). The hymns are also very meaningful.

3. How would you describe your RUF to people interested in coming?

RUF is a group that meets once a week to sing hymns and hear the bible taught. It is a great place to learn about/ask honest questions about God and Jesus and what that has to do with you. There are also other RUF activities going on at different times where you can meet new people and have some fun (smaller bible studies, game nights, lunch at the caf, etc).

5. How did God use RUF in your life?

I think RUF was sort of a wake up call for me: I couldn't call myself a Christian and only have God superficially in my life. I couldn't keep making it up as I went along anymore. I needed sound teaching. RUF, CTK and other bible studies that I started going to helped me to find out the truth about God. It also helped me to stop focussing on myself and how to fit God into my life and to focus on God and how to make my life work for his purpose.

6. What did RUF teach you about Jesus and the church?

One thing that was really different about RUF from anything else I'd ever taken part in was emphasis on the bible. I guess I was forced to answer the question "Do you believe the bible?". I had considered myself a Christian before but I really didn't know much about the bible and I saw that if I didn't know the bible then how could I know Jesus because the bible is all about Jesus.

Also, I think that RUF was that push that made me get involved in fellowship throughout the week instead of just seeing people on Sunday in church. (So I guess my view of the church changed from just a Sunday morning activity to actually "God's people" and being a part of them.)

7. What are you doing now? Where are you in church?

Now I am a housewife in Houston. We moved here a little less than a year ago and I slowly making friends here. We attend a weekly community group where we sing hymns and talk about the bible passage that is going to be read in the upcoming Sunday worship service. The members of this group are mostly young families like ours so we the group takes a particular focus on preparing the kids for worship on Sunday and including them in the discussion.

Also, I am going to the weekly women's bible study. I really like this group because we have all different kinds of women in this group. It is really fascinating to hear the advice of the older women in the group. It is also good to share in each other's struggles and pray for one another.
